It may be easy publicity but that doesn't mean it shouldn't have been 
done. I certainly don't think the publicity is "the only reason he did 
it". Surely the fact that it's the right thing to do *and* there's good 
publicity is more likely!

Apologies cost very little but can mean a lot to some people (such as 
relatives and those who revere him and his work) so if there's no reason 
not to apologise, why not do it?
