As a relatively new lurker to this mailing list, and having been unaware
of the #gllug channel until recent events, I find this comment informative:

I tend to expect Linux channels to be about Linux, Apache channels to be
about Apache, and social welfare channels to be about social welfare.
Would it be appropriate to name the channel something else, if its
content is not expected to be suitable for anybody with an involvement
in Linux?

When strong (and totally unrelated) political opinions are associated
with something labelled as a Linux channel, then as a Linux professional
I do feel that it is appropriate for me to to speak out. This kind of
thing actually can hurt Linux, which has (in most circles) got away from
the image of being thrown together by ignorant students and hackers, and
is now seen as a viable professional choice. Association with this kind
of chat does not help an OS which has no stated opinion about welfare
systems.

I'm all in favour of people discussing absolutely anything they want,
but not at the expense of the reputation of Linux
