[Gllug] Problems with short internet interruptions

Hello,
I get random short (perhaps 2 minutes) but very annoying ADSL re-syncs
between my modem and C&W (LLU) which frequently interfere with downloads.
They rarely occur while I am sitting at the computer, but on one occasion my
modem showed that it was still locked to the local exchange with adequate
S/N ratio but apparently not connected through to C&W until my modem did a
full automatic re-sync after a few minutes.
The ADSL re-syncs often occur during a scheduled update after midnight,
but not after any set time. I am using ftpsync
(ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/project/ftpsync) which depends on rsync, with a

long timeout. The short connection break also breaks rsync, and I eventually
receive a message that the ftpsync has failed.
The re-syncs do not appear to be temperature or weather related, and my
modem is physically undisturbed in a cold location.
I do not know the cause of the connection breaks although they may be
triggered during data transfer, (I have swapped the modem), or why a short
connection break should break rsync unless the re-start results in a
re-connection as a new client, despite my fixed IP address.
Two breaks so far today, both breaking ftpsync, so I have just restarted
ftpsync for the third time.
