TeXLive 2010 isn't released yet anyway.  But you could always remove all
TeX-related packages and install everything from the TeXLive 2009 distribution.

I've had a bit more of a look at the ConTeXt documentation, and I'm
thinking ConTeXt
probably really would have solved the problems that you saw when
trying to typeset
the book with LaTeX - I'd be very interested to know whether you think
that's the case.
