In Emacs's case, these must have been done in previous systems. It
started in phase 3 (or phase 2 if you won't dignify TECO with the term
'programming language'). Of course, because it's a Lisp system, perhaps
it simply started as a small ball of mud, and accreted until it became a
big one.

I'm running five right now. I agree. :)))
(but I'm doing most of my work outside all VMs.)
