I've been happy with an iPod for the last few years, mostly for
precisely the reasons everybody else seems to dislike them.

I find an internal battery that's charged in place to be a lot less
hassle than swapping batteries - even when I did habitually pedal, I
rarely spent longer than the battery life of the ipod out on the bike.
This way I just plug it in when I get back and leave it be.
I know plenty of other people find it less hassle to remove the
batteries and stick them in a charger or whatever, but my brief go at
that showed that I'm horrendous at putting that off, but the one-step
process of plugging the ipod in is something I appear capable of.

I also find the dragging-and-dropping of files to be completely not
preferable to moving the music over as songs or by albums or artists.
Modern (software) music players cope very well with completely ignoring
the directory structure and using file metadata instead, I really don't
see why ignoring this would be a plus point for a hardware music player.
