Dear all

Some of you helped me sort out my modem problems recently and I am now =
connected using Mandrake 9. I have the same problem with my internal =
modem as I did using Redhat. Basically I get a very slow connection =
which eventually drops to nothing and stalls. Taking some of your =
advice, I decided to buy an external modem. It is a "Diamond =
SupraExpress 56e PRO -serial port" modem.

I have no problem finding the modem using KPPP (& wvdial) and it dials =
up, but when I get to the "Logging onto the network" bit and the log =
script debug window says "Starting pppd". Thats as far as it gets.

I then get an error saying:

Timeout expired while waiting for the PPP interface to come up!

The ppp log is as follows:

Dec 29 15:38:37 localhost pppd[1726]: pppd 2.4.1 started by jason, uid =
501

Dec 29 15:39:21 localhost pppd[1726]: Terminating on signal 15.

Dec 29 15:39:21 localhost pppd[1726]: Exit.

For more detail I started kppp in the terminal. This is what I got:

Opener: received SetSecret

Opener: received OpenLock

Opener: received OpenDevice

Opener: received ExecPPPDaemon

In parent: pppd pid 1766

Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device

Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device

Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device

Kernel supports ppp alright.

Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device

Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device

Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device

Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device

Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device

Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device

>From what I can see it is a problem with pppd or ppp0. Does anybody know =
how to correct this problem. I would be very gratefull for any help.=20

Cheers Jason Watts
