Ladies and Gentlemen,

Has anyone experience and/or ambitions for professional recognition =
and/or training in Linux and related Open Source systems (e.g. MySQL)?
---

This is my open question looking for polite and constructive comments.

(And apologies for any duplication if it has been covered recently - I =
noted some comments about a couple of altruistic LPI preparation events =
at the beginning of the year in the Glug archives but didn't have the =
patience to search any further back - if you have a useful references =
please advise.)
-----

There is clearly a choice of Linux Certifications . Which to choose?=20
I have added suggested a few below, together with opening comments from =
just browsing the web, to act a cinders in the hope of smoking out some =
real information instead of my interpretation of 'Web Spin' - but no =
flames please!:

RedHat Expensive (unless someone else is paying) and to an =
extent proprietary. Quite well known.

LPI Lower cost than RedHat - perhaps the front 'non =
proprietary' runner - seems to have at least moral support from some =
industry players without being openly proprietary. 'Lower' levels seem =
to be in active revision - not sure about higher end. Has some support =
of 'self-teach' documentation.

SAIR At first glance somewhat similar to LPI but each exam =
more focussed on specific programs including Apache. Has a set of =
'books' written to accompany it, but half of them seem to be =
out-of-print, which is somewhat concerning as the authors also claim to =
be connected to the specifying body.

COMPTIA - Linux+ More of train for everything (and I assume =
commercial) organisation compared to the other more focussed bodies. =
Seemed to be limited to first level?

-----
MySQL - not Linux but clearly related for many people. =20

ANother ???=20

------
Requested thoughts include:

  Quality/applicability/usefulness of different ones.

  Relevance to the real world.

Availability (including cost) of relevant and useful training =
material.

Any personal interest in sharing experience or obtaining training.=20
(I noted comments at the last meeting about local college arranging =
something for autumn onwards - does this have a qualification side or =
will it be just an 'introduction' or similar?)

Comments on any exams taken (passed and/or failed) - not a dump of =
actual questions - more things like type and style of questions compared =
to your expectations etc.=20

e.g. Did you feel it was testing your:
     1/ Real understanding.
2/ Memory of obscure parameters to command-line programs you had =
never need to use.
3/ Psychological profile when faced obscurely worded questions =
whose answer was more luck than judgement.
4/ Attendance at a 'boot camp' at which you were provided a list =
of answers to obscure questions.

Many thanks (in advance) for your constructive thoughts.

Regards
Dave
