as well as the good advice you have already recieved may I just add one 
more bit. I *guess* that the Ubunto iso requires a 700M (80min) cd and 
not the older,smaller 650MB ones. This caught me out with knoppix yonks ago.

Cue "650MB CDs. Those were the days!"
