I have one of these as well. I've had it for about 18 months with no problems.

It's easy to configure via telnet or the web interface.

If you want to try a USB modem, I have one of these you can have for a fiver:

There are drivers available for linux and help should be on hand, should you
need it, as it is a very popular modem.

I would say that a combined router and modem is probably the easiest and most
flexible option.
