Unfortunately I have no experience with the dongle.
However I use O2 mobile on Ubuntu via Bluetooth and my mobile phone.
Many mobile phones have Bluetooth, as do many laptops, and you can use
these mobiles like a 3G modem. The phone is able to continue receiving
texts/calls whilst in use (connection remains active during a call but
data transfer is suspended).
