Lots of things like this are explained on the Ubuntu lists and the excellent searchable forum.
 I never found out why my
printing has come out pale with Ubuntu but I did find out that it's impossible to update
a Dell BIOS without some help from windoze. Ubuntu community people are trying to make updating
possible with Linux only.

PS while I was writing the above my Evolution seemed to be unable to
manage sensible line lengths. Probably because I was writing over John's
former message. I learn something every day!
