hi all,
i've been gaming on linux.
first i had to install nvidia's drivers. they are available on the
ubuntu install cd (i opened up synaptic, did a search for "nvidia" and
there they were). i edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that the driver was
"nvidia" instead of "nv" and i disabled one of the modules (forget
which one now). i restarted the x server control-alt-backspace and it
worked first time. as a quick test i ran some of the more graphically
intense screensavers and there was a massive improvement.
next i installed unreal tournament 2004. it installed without a hitch
but it would occasionally crash for now reason. i downloaded the
latest linux patch and applied it and it worked like a dream. i played
it for a while with no problems.
ok, i've now got a lot of non free software on my system, but at least
i don't need to boot windows to play games.
john.
