Hi, Matt,

I've no experience with VL, but I'm a huge fan of Zenwalk Linux 
(www.zenwalk.org).

Zenwalk is Slackware based, like VL. Default desktop is XFCE. Uses 
"netpkg" to update from packages from the web. Very nice.
