It is similar in that its a CMS, but really Mambo is a toy compared to 
Plone. Plone is the Mercedes, Mambo the Ford Focus ....

You can even use Plone as an intranet, a file server, media server ... 
possibilities are endless. Its a real heavy duty juggernault .
