This might help I hope

IDE0
cable with 2 ports
hda1  | (normally Master boot)
hda2  | Each of the numbers represents a partition so this drive has 3
hda3  |
hdb1  | slave Drive if there are more partitions it will work the same as 
above.


IDE1
Cable has 2 ports
hdc1  | say CD rom drive
hdd1  | Say DVD drive

If you put your old harddisk on IDE0 as a slave

you will need to mount the drive as Julian suggested

mount -t auto /dev/hdb1 /mnt/backmeup1
if you have more than one partition on the drive makesure you do the same per 
partition

hope this helps make sure when you setup the slave the cable is correct as 
well as the jumpers....
