Hi Daniel
Yes, it does look like you've been unlucky. However, more recent kernels
appear to be much better in terms of the issue with speed that someone
mentioned in the thread.
It may be worth waiting for Ubuntu 8.04 which wont be long now, as this
would have a kernel 2.6.24+ (i think) that is newer than Gutsy, and
would contain the fix mentioned. Also, Ubuntu has seen many improvements
dealing with proprietary device drivers, such as Nvidia and ATI display
drivers, so may work better perhaps than Gutsy. Nvidia (and Intel)
always used to be a far better bet, but ATI are getting better linux
drivers these days.
Also, I'm a bit surprised why your WLAN may have problems according to
the thread. The Broadcom BC4300 chips again, are well known and I
thought had the means to easily download and install a wlan driver for
them. Gooogling suggests that in Kernel 2.6.24onwards that there is a
driver that will work with the BC4300 series of WLAN cards. No
guarantees but looks quite promising now.
Ubuntu Hardy, (aka 8.04 ) will be out in April, so not long if you
wanted to try that. If you impatient, you could instead download one of
their beta builds which will be out imminently , cross your fingers for
the install and then just upgrade to the final 8.04, when released, but
it could be a bit messy if you're unlucky.
Bring the laptop along to the next meet, and we'll do our best to help.
As we don't have any official net access there, please bring your notes,
and drivers beforehand, if you can get to download them first.
See you at the next meeting
