You can try Firebug http://getfirebug.com/. Its a pretty useful tool, 
and quite powerful.

Possibly, NVU isnt developed anymore try Kompozer instead. Though the 
version in Ubuntu 8.10 crashed a lot. Hopefully the version for 9.0.4 is 
fixed.

I think Firebug and Kompozer have at least Linux/Windows version,
