I have a feeling that due to Kdenlive's reliance on lots on libraries
that really the newer the better in this regard. Many of the ffmpeg libs
on Ubuntu lesser than 8.10 are really quite old, and will not give as
good results.
8.10 is pretty stable, and ifs its mainly for home use, you should be
fine; fingers crossed when upgrading to it. Steer clear of Jaunty ie
Ubuntu 9.04 for now, or at least until the last Release Candidates
