Many thanks for that Sarah,

I ended up wiping the think for a clean sweep and managed to make a
data-stick version of Ubuntu 10.4. It installed ok and seems to have got
over the previous problems. Now I seem to be able to install other
programmes but have no idea where they go when they're installed or how to
run them. Thanks for your offer to bring along a disc but best now if I
could bring along my computer.

Regards,

Chris.

Tom - I run 10.04 on 32 bit systems in the office and on a 64bit system
for home use - also run the netbook version on my Eee.
I have had no problems with it on the 32 bit systems - the 64 bit
version is not as trouble free - notably updates keep stalling.
I am very happy with 10.04 - everything worked fine for me - it's fast
and stable.
Please do go to the piratepad and add your reasons for switching to
linux as Pete needs some more personal stories of why people started
using linux for our ISFD - it doesn't have to be more than a few lines!

Chris - you should not have a problem downloading & burning the iso on
windows - but you should check the md5sum -
if you haven't seen them already check these links

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto#Windows
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

if you still have trouble and are coming to the meeting let me know and
I can bring you a disc in
