great that worked  base is now speeding along again - thanks v much
julian - it really slowed down my day - I'll keep an eye on the openjdk
and test it again next time it updates 
not sure how it will impact on running  the database on my netbook but
as i never quite solved the problems i had with the data display in
forms on the netbook anyway it will be something to do when i have an
idle moment
