[HLUG] Herefordshire Digest, Vol 1330, Issue 2

Hi Hevin, thanks for the feedback, I am aware of the first error message and I think I can fix that quite easily, I got a bit over-zealous with the editing of config files and removed a bit too much which made it switch to the default lxde right-click menu instead of a restricted openbox one. The web-browser I restricted to root users - I also did this to the terminal, but it seems the right-click terminal launcher bypasses this - but again fixing the previous error will fix this one as well. The problem with the icons is something I need to look at again - they use absolute x/y coordinates and I may need to use relative ones, or at least all them to resize depending on the resolution. I hadn't noticed the screen-saver issue - but there are screensavers installed - perhaps the random selection picked one that was missing - I will check this out. You should be able to configure the printers from the desktop icon (if you can see it) but I may have taken away printing priveleges while I was locking it down - I may have also prevented the mounting of drives. In theory the user should be able to print and save stuff to USB because no admin rights will be required, but I didn't test this out yet. I basically ran out of time on Friday so decided to publish and be damned - hopefully by Wednesday I will have ironed out most of these issues - but there are lots of things I want to get other people opinions on... Feedback on the programs themselves by younger children would be good - some of them are based at 2-3 year olds - others at 10 year olds.

Hi Tony
Tried running the iso up and it boots well and feels quick and responsive.
So far looks like a few simple issues are showing:
1) Openbox gives me an xml error in /usr/share/lubuntu/openbox/menuxml on line 1 it says it expects a start tag '<' not found.
That may be connected with the right click menu that offers terminal, browser, ObConf etc
2) Web browser using the right click menu doesn't run but terminal and others do.
3) Some of the icons on a v small screen 1024x600 are falling off the bottom eg 1000 eee I have.
4) Screensaver also reports an error of no images available, but promptly displays a default ;-)
I will go over the apps and check them through to check they are all behaving.
I will try it on half a dozen different boxes and screens around here to see if there are any typical hardware issues, hopefully over the weekend. Is there anything on printing and perhaps saving states to some kind of external persistence file? Keeping track of performance and comparatives in a class environment could be important.
I will also ask Polly, my 9 yr old to have a look and see how quickly she gets it ;-) but it looks like a great start to me!
Kevin

yes that's what i use
just a note that with my eee - you have to press esc at the bios screen
to get to 'choose hdd or usb boot' - going in via F2 will not make it
boot from usb
I always forget this and spend 10 minutes wondering why it doesn't boot

it should show your home directory
are you getting a typical browse box with a left menu offering search,
recently used root, desktop, filesystem as options to choose?

don't know why that's happening to you - perhaps a more tech minded list
member can help otherwise go for the dvd or
I think in 10.04 you can also use start up disk creator which is in
system >admin - but I have always used unetbootin
