This is one of the downsides of Debian - it is fast and small but its hardware support isn't that great. Maybe try the Lubuntu version?

I will be burning some live cd's - so we have plenty for the school
I my also do some extra custom discs just incase
The live version running on a usb stick works fine only one slight hitch
- on my Eee the mouse works except that oddly my mouse pad will not
respond to taps I have to actually click the Left button on the pad - it
worked fine in the previous version but it's not a major hassle.
