Cannot upload a route directly into OSM. You need to draw a way(nodes connected in a line) and then add relations (something I didn't cover in my talk).
The definitive line is in the wiki here http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Cycle_routes
In general you should not create your personal routes in OSM but it should be acceptable to create routes that are generally published and accepted.
You can trace a way using bing sat data and improve detail or accuracy with GPS traces from your mobile
As you say, many apps exist to facilitate this. I really like OSMTracker
