Phil,

Got a decent tester if you're close by. Also, what switches are you using or are you plugging directly into the built in switch on the ADSL? You could set up some syslog on the switch. Also the nic on the PC could be dodgy, it happens. Another idea would be to temporarily put a Cisco switch at the ADSL end and monitor syslog off that and try to reproduce the fault.
