as its an old Vista PC
i'd not put the latest snazzy ubuntu on it
but xubuntu.org

(On faster machines I put UbuntuStudio.org )

You could try installing Plop so you can boot from a live usb, if you 
look on youtube there are several clips on how to do this. This tool 
works if you do not have bootable usb ports on your machine, you have to 
burn it onto a cd or dvd.
