*"Could not get a clean download of xubuntu or ubuntu 15.4, due to the
chinese writing/and scrambled graphics ( any ideas )."*
Those are precisely the difficulties, which prompted by recent departure
from Ubuntu. Mint 17, which is based on Ubuntu 14 is now up and running
properly. The problem in my case appeared to revolve around the Unity
desktop and NVidia graphics adaptor drivers. It took me a long time before
I discovered that default driver, NVidia driver, updated to latest version
graphics adaptor driver made absolutely bugger all difference because
recent versions of Ubuntu don't work with my GeForce 7300 LE graphics
adapter (aren't there a lot of them?). Such are the wonders of open source
that there were no end of discussion groups that told me about the correct
driver, but only one which told me that it didn't actually work in Ubuntu
15. You might be forgiven for thinking that if it is unity that is causing
the problem then Xubuntu should provide a suitable sidestep - it didn't,
but Mint did and my guess that's because it has taken me back to Ubuntu 14.
