Unless you are in an area covered by a company such as Virgin (VERY unlikely in or near Herefordshire) you are at the mercy of BT who lease capacity to other operators.

As Julian said fibre will go as far as the green box and copper, either above ground or below depending on the age of your house.

For guidance ( live in Burghill less than 1/2 mile from the local exchange and got about 5mbs most times and up to 10 mbs in the middle of the night).

I recently took advantage of a grotesque price hike by EE to swap to BT and feeling flush lashed out on the "BT Infinity" package which is fibre as far as the green box (never found it on my estate) and underground copper (1990's estate) to my house. I now usually get 25-35 mbs and (allowing for the price of the router- a way of getting extra money in my view) BT charges me £26.99 per month (just checked via website ) for a 12 month contract. After that I'll look again.

The only extra as far as i can tell is that I'm able to connect to WIFI hotspots via my BT username and password (which escapes me as I am "of a certain age".

If the above makes economic sense go for it, Otherwise stay with copper.

There's a new loop of broadband cable hanging off a pole 100 yards away:

I think they're going to fit a box to it.

Will they then connect to me with copper?

would things be faster if they connected to me with cable,

would this cost much extra?

Hi George

Yes you're very likely to get copper but normally the cable will run to a
green cabinet.

You're not likely to get a full fibre connection as its costs more to do
this but apparently some of the fibre to the house infrastructure my be in
place for any future requirements.
