[HLUG] Two Questions - currently unable to attend meetings

I have an old laptop with Ubuntu 8 which will not connect to the 
internet so I cannot upgrade.

Any suggestions? I think the laptop is 32bit.

Also, my new desktop Linux finds my Brother printer, but does not 
realise that it is a scanner too.

How do I connect to the scanner function?
