But mode lines is what you want.  Other than installing the correct 
video driver for your card.

Just add the modes in to your xorg.conf.  See this:

You may want to disable the auto-detect thing.  It's called DDC and it 
is possible to disable it with the 'noDDC' option

         Option          "NoDDC"

in the Device section.  Try it with and without.

Oh - and of course do keep a copy of your original xorg.conf before you 
start playing :)

Oh and dumping debian based distributions won't help you.  (Despite the 
fact that I choose Fedora)  Xorg is moving more in the direction of auto 
detection and in the lastest versions of Fedora the file is optional!
