I had this experience with a DVD drive when my main PC broke, and I had to use a spare....
It turned out the DVD machine couldn't use the type of medium....I don't recall if it was dvd+r, or -r, but I even looked for a firmware update....but to no avail
Changing the DVD machine itself for a newer type that did all media was the only thing that totally solved the problem, in the end - it only cost about £17, and took about 20minutes to fit, if I recall
