Following up on this, and after several emails to various folk, I've
decided that I'm going to have a go at hosting my sites for me on this
machine.

I can install wordpress from the debian repo, which will also pull in
php5, mysql, and apache2, thereby filling all the requirements.

But, I can see two difficulties happening -
 * I’ve found out how to remove my sites from 1and1, but how do I get
the web to find them. I've done a 'whois' on each of my sites, and
this is what my blog site looks like -
===============================================
    Domain name:
        sharons.org.uk

    Registrant:
        Sharon Kimble

    Registrant type:
        UK Individual

    Registrant's address:
The registrant is a non-trading individual who has opted to
have their address omitted from the WHOIS service.

    Registrar:
        1 & 1 Internet AG [Tag = SCHLUND]
        URL: http://www.1and1.co.uk or http://registrar.1und1.info

    Relevant dates:

        Registered until expiry date.

 * so how do i get the new registration pointing to my site please?
I've tried googling for it, but am not really sure of what I should
   be looking for!

 * Several people have mentioned 'dyndns' which I've used before. These
are the lookalikes currently available for debian stable, but, which
   is the best please?

 acs dyndns
ddclient - address updating utility for dynamic DNS services
ddns3-client - Issues dynamic DNS v3 requests
dyndns - dynamic DNS (DDNS) update client implemented in Perl
ez-ipupdate - client for most dynamic DNS services
inadyn - client to alleviate the requirements for an Internet name
ipcheck - Dyndns.org client to register your dynamic IP address
tinydyndns - pop-before-dyndns service using djbdns

Its becoming increasingly doable to host it myself the more I read the
more confident I get that I can do it, but I'd still like the advice of
folks who do this more often in their daily jobs please? Or anyone who
has a point of view which could give me something else to think about
as well.

Thanks folks
Sharon.
