C/C++ Linux Software Engineer opportunity in central London with a small but incredibly successful software house focusing on development of massively scalable backend web software. The company embraces Open Source technologies, so you will be working on a Linux platform and although you will primarily be using C/C++ you are likely to have involvement in Perl, PHP, Python or Ruby based projects as well - after all, it is about using the right tool for the job. You will also be using a range of Open Source frameworks & toolkits and will be expected to keep abreast of developments in these areas.

The role will be diverse, working on varied challenging projects involving distributed systems, network programming and security. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to get involved in software architecture & design, and to contribute ideas for future development projects and new technology adoption. Although this is a fast-paced, creative environment, that doesn't mean that you'll be hacking away without regard for quality, documentation or maintainability - you will be expected to write clean, efficient, well-documented code. If you are looking for a role where you can blend into the background then it's not for you, but if you are looking for a role where you can push yourself and work on solving complex problems then it could be spot on.

Although not essential it is likely that the successful candidate will have a good academic background (2:1 or above in a relevant field such as Computer Science) combined with a passion for Open Source software and proven commercial software development experience. Your intelligence and the complexity of the work you have done are of more importance than length of experience, but it is likely that you will have worked on at least 2 major development projects. You'll need good software design and coding skills, ideally in C/C++, and will probably be running Linux at home. It's likely (but not essential) that you will also be active in the Open Source community or will play around with PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby etc at home. Good mathematical skills or experience writing algorithmically intensive software would be desirable and candidates who have worked on distributed systems or have knowledge of network programming or internet security would be of particular interest. However, if you don't have experience in these areas but like the sound of the role, please send your CV anyway and we can talk through it in more detail.

This is a full-time permanent job and I regret that this client will not consider applications from candidates requiring a work permit, contractors, outsourced/offshore developers or remote workers. To apply, please email your CV to sam.brown at engagepsg.co.uk.
