Vaisala Data Services is dedicated to providing customers with reliable, secure and efficient computer environments for acquiring, storing and disseminating data. Such solutions are available as hosted Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) systems or standalone platforms, both essential to strategic business offerings.
 
Vaisala Birmingham Data Services is looking for a Systems Administrator to support the installation and maintenance of both standalone and hosted systems. It is an opportunity to work in the interesting environmental field of meteorology within standard Linux IT frameworks. 
 
Responsibilities: 
Installation and maintenance of data collection and GIS map display systems on Linux servers to support SaaS offerings
Installation and maintenance of standalone Linux systems for individual customers, including overseas travel to customer locations
Project management of system deliveries to ensure customer expectations and time schedules are met
Maintenance and evolution of specific systems to ensure optimization and integration of the latest applications
Testing of new applications and modules
Provision of training to support teams on new and upgraded systems
Representation of data services on appropriate development projects
Inclusion as part of the Services support teams both during office hours and out-of-hours on-call
 
Qualifications: 
Administrative knowledge of Linux Operating Systems (RedHat or CentOS. External qualification or proven experience)
Scripting knowledge (Python, Bash or Perl)
Working knowledge of SQL databases (PostgreSQL preferred)
Understanding of data exchange technologies (XML, FTP, HTTP, web services)
Understanding of networking and Internet principles (firewalls, load balancers, VPN, SSH)
Understanding of server hardware and peripheral components
Ability to work as part of a team or alone as projects require
Creative problem solving skills and proactive innovation
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Fluency in English
 
Desirable skills:
Previous experience working with GIS or map-based display systems
Understanding of serial communications
Experience of Data Centre and virtualised server environments (VMware/vSphere)
Knowledge of configuration management (Puppet preferred)
Knowledge of ITIL best practise
Project management experience
