[Malvern] Graphics

If you go to

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/WitchofAgnesi.html

you will see an interesting animation of a mathematical function called
"The Witch of Agnesi".

My interest is in how this is done.

I understand that computer gamers have an interest in fast graphics.
I have heard that even the Linux ones sometimes prefer Windows for
certain games.

Is this to do with the X-window system, or  perhaps some fancy accelerated
graphics card they may have ?
