I guess having a boot cd which actually has all the extra options and
being aware that there are things like bf24 helps. I've just trashed
the system and re-installed using bf24 from a different debian CD. It
seems to be setting it up with a 2.4 kernel now at least.

It's a shame that some of the documentation seems out of date on
debian.org - claiming it's a 5 CD set but in fact I've got a 7 CD set.
I'm getting there slowly.
