I agree, and would add that there is lots of excellent online
documentation. Probably the best for you is the one describing the boot
up process "From boot to shell prompt" or some such.
Even Mandrake can operate 'text only' if you wish, even throughout the
install process. You also get the choice of whether or not you want to
install X, a graphical login manager or any desktops. You can stay
command-line text only, or just do the ctl-alt-F1 trick to bring up a
full screen tty.
Myself, I prefer a BIG text terminal window as part of a nice lazy KDE
setup...
