This certainly IS possible, I'm also using the LXF cover version of Mandy
10 and was able to set up my NTL broadband connection (ethernet to the 
cable modem) without too much difficulty, even though the community edition
of drakconnect IS buggy.  It's possible that we're using different drivers
for our NICs though - are you able to get the NIC working at all?  I'm using
8139too.
