Solved this one.  For some reason, /tmp/mcop-david wasn't owned by me - 
goodness knows why.  Correct the ownership and it works.

Not the clearest of error messages, though, and it took an error message on a 
compeltely unrelated issue to tarck this one down - then the totem message 
disappeared too.
