I can't comment on the mobo etc, but to answer your last question, no
there is no reason why a 32 bit install would not work.  I used a 32bit
distro on my amd64 machine initially.  It is certainly worth going 64bit
if you can though.  For a significant minority of apps it can make a
very big difference.
