Not so surprising, cable modems usually present their connection as
ethernet, as do many wireless providers. Also office blocks are often
cabled up so the landlords can sell network services to their clients.
A small router is perfect for that, my WRT54G does a top job of sharing
the cable modem I have right now, even if the default gateway does
sometimes seem to go on holiday.
I've used the WAG54G and am surprised as to how crap it is. DHCP
sometimes doesn't work, periodically needs resetting. Ex house mate has
just bought the new WAG354G, that'll be something to keep an eye on.
I did use a number of Linksys' ethernet-ethernet routers in $job-1 (a
certain tin-pot operation in the city centre), I was impressed. Decent
data rates (on the test bench) and an easy interface.
