I don't think /dev/smartcard1 is correct. Have you actually got a
/dev/smartcard1 device? After plugging the device in, what does "ls
/dev/smartcard1" give you?

One of /dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdc1, /dev/sdd1 should be used
instead. (Or more accurately one of the files in /dev/disks/by-uuid)
