Hi Dan,
I've had similar problems with various kernel upgrades, including a recent 
edgy to feisty dist-upgrade, and unless your hardware broke (unlikely but 
possible) I believe it can all be fixed up without resorting to a reinstall. 
First step I would take is to try to get GRUB to find a bootable 
kernel/initrd; this requires delving into the GRUB docs (or finding someone 
with GRUB fu). If that goes nowhere fast, I'd reach for a knoppix live CD and 
use it to fix everything - I think I have the Knoppix Hacks book at home and 
it's bound to cover GRUB and initrd fixing. If you have net access from 
another machine get straight onto the Ububtu forums with it: it may be a 
known issue for which there's a direct workaround and fix. In any case, keep 
this thread alive and we'll help as much as we can.
