The Ubuntu live-cd you used (was it the 6.06?) may not be au fait with the new 
way discs are identified by the kernel in newer Ubuntu releases. If you can, 
try a feisty live CD or recent Knoppix: they should both contain the things 
you need: fsdisk/cfsdisk/fsck/mount/chroot/etc.
