The box is a fully up to date Debian Sid AMD 64 updated every day so
there will be updates but I don't see how they would have screwed up
gftp. Kasablanca, Igloo-FTP and Filezilla are new installs today to
see if it was a problem with gftp.
It is not an annonymous connection it is a webserver and I have the
correct user name and password which is being used with the gui
clients and also from cli.
This is from Filezilla

The only thing I can see that maybe screwing up things is the file
index99.html I cannot delete this from the command line and yesterday
when gftp was working I couldn't delete it from there either. It looks
as if a space might be the first character in the file name as I would
have though with an alphabetical listing it should appear just after
index.html
