Ugh, unfortunately it's probably more to do with that Broadcom adaptor
rather than Ubuntu itself.

Sadly Broadcom adaptors are really quite flakey because you have to
use the proprietary driver, which may or may not require a non-zero
amount of imaginative hackery to get working. This page might help

However, Broadcom recently released a whole chunk of code so the
situation is likely to improve in the future but that code is still in
the staging tree and has not yet been merged in the mainline upstream
kernel. I don't know if Ubuntu have back-ported it to any of their
released kernels.
