They should simply impose (or spec) an open standard.
Security can still be applied through the use of certs/keys/codes/whatever.
New provider? Someone spend 5 minutes changing the cert/whatever, or
installing a new one, as part of the change over.

Then, and here's the clever bit, *any* device could install an app, be
given the key and be used to monitor. Much better than the proprietary
box on the wall which you can't audit.

Can't see it happening though, a bit too sensible for our lot.
