Yep... As was 'discovered'!

So, after many years of ALSA just simply working, PulseAudio is now a
whole new world...

The disconnect is that PulseAudio is not connecting with anything
'connected with' ALSA and also doesn't connect to ALSA either. All
despite installing all the recommended bits.

There's more to the technical story also. That's for this evening if
anyone wants a laugh!
