I don't personally use gnome2. But I can tell you that several gnome2 
libraries and utilities are present in the stable version of Debian which 
indicates it should not be far away.

I use the stable version of Debian: primarily because all my hardware seems 
to work with it OK. Why make life more complicated than it needs to be? If I 
had more time to mess about with it I would run the testing version. 
I don't feel ready for the daredevil 'unstable' scene!
