I think kernel panics when running existing installs on newly changed hardware 
tend to occur when the kernels have be tuned for the specific machine whereas 
most modern distros just have a fairly generic kernel and everything else is 
compiled as modules.  So if the kernel has been tuned such that most of the 
modules don't exist then a kernel panic is probable.
